Domo Tactical Communications (DTC), the RF specialist company, has announced the development of a powerful, flexible, new software-defined radio platform (designated SOLO8SDR) as the cornerstone of its next generation wireless surveillance products. This means that the SOLO8SDR product can run multiple applications, much like a smartphone, and therefore run whatever transmission applications the user requires at the time.
Obtained by The Intercept as part of a larger document dump from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the 120-page catalog for “tactical communications and surveillance” devices suggests. The Company formerly known as Cobham TCS, which included Spectronic Denmark A/S as part of its tactical communications and surveillance division, announced that its new registered company name has changed to ‘Domo Tactical Communications (DTC) Ltd’ and Spectronic will continue to trade under the same name. The change follows an announcement on Continued. With this first product launch, security, law enforcement and broadcast professionals now have access to a new surveillance radio product which will offer a wide range of capabilities for security, surveillance and counter terrorism applications.
DTC has developed 3 variants; an ultra-miniature OEM module that can be easily integrated with a wide range of devices such as a PTZ camera within covert housing, a robust transmitter variant for body worn and remote deployment and a high power variant for long range applications.
DTC’s Video and Broadcast Value Stream Leader, Andrew Tilbury, has said “We are very excited about the new platform and the engineering team is extending the capabilities of the device every day. This new processing power and application flexibility will enable us to rewrite the book on wireless product capabilities. With twin HD SDI camera inputs, on-board recording, power management, an embedded data radio for remote control and Ethernet encoding and connectivity, this will be the most powerful device we have ever produced and there is more to come.”
The unit has 3 applications, Dual HD SDI input transmitter, Dual HDSDI Input IP encoder and Dual HD SDI input mesh.
“The core of the new platform is a Linux OS Dual ARM core and programmable logic, offering the capability in a flexible software defined radio. We envisage the platform running apps like a smartphone, and depending on the code running in the core, the unit switches personality”, “this new development would not be possible without the ongoing commitment by DTC to the flexibility that the latest FPGA systems can offer compared to ASIC based devices.” said Neil McSparron, Chief Technical Officer.
The ability to perform multiple tasks from such a device will substantially reduce the amount of equipment needed to be carried into the field, as well as the inventory typically held by intelligence agencies and police forces. Additionally, new product development lead times can be significantly reduced and we can incorporate customer sponsored developments much quicker than we have done in the past.
